Ants are a constant summer problem in Bacchus Marsh, where hot, dry weather sends them indoors looking for water and food. The most common ones are black house ants in kitchens and bathrooms, coastal brown ants that push up little piles of soil along paths and slab edges, and meat ants that build large gravel-covered mounds in yards and paddocks. Bull ants can also nest near houses on rural blocks.
Killing the ants you can see does not solve the problem, because the colony simply sends more workers. The crew we book tracks the trails back to where the ants are nesting and entering the house, then treats the nest, the entry points and the trails. Ants on rural blocks often nest under pavers, rocks and tank stands. Inside, baits are often used, as the workers carry them back to the colony and share them.

For a few days after the visit you may see more ants rather than fewer, as they feed on the bait. Leave the trails alone during this time so the bait reaches the nest. Once numbers drop, keep food in sealed containers, wipe up spills and sticky jars, fix leaking taps and trim plants back from the walls so ants have fewer bridges into the house.
